The decision of manager John McNamara to let relief pitcher Butch Metzger bat in the 11th inning paid off with an unearned run that gave the Padres a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. Metzger drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pickoff attempt by Elias Sosa and scored on a sacrifice fly by Willie Davis. As a result, Metzger gained credit for his seventh straight victory with help from Dave Freisleben, who had to come to his rescue in the Dodgers' half of the 11th. [The Sporting News]
