In the second inning, after Thurman Munson doubled and Chris Chambliss walked, Rico Petrocelli booted a two-out grounder by Willie Randolph, loading the bases.

Fred Stanley then singled, driving in two runs, and Mickey Rivers laid down a safe bunt for the third counter. The Yanks picked up their only untainted tally in the sixth when Munson doubled again and Graig Nettles singled. Jim Rice wrecked Figueroa's shutout bid with a homer in the eighth inning.
