Reliever Butch Metzger, who pitched to only one batter, received credit for his eighth straight victory when the Padres scored in the ninth inning on a double by Dave Winfield to defeat the Dodgers, 6-5. Randy Jones started for the Padres but went out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh after giving up seven hits and all of the Dodgers' runs. The Padres, who were losing, 5-1, when Jones departed, rallied in the eighth inning to tie the score and take their ace lefthander off the hook. [The Sporting News]
