Making their debut under Norm Sherry, who replaced Dick Williams as manager, the Angels swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Rangers, 8-0 and 4-3. In the opener, Paul Hartzell yielded only three hits and posted his first major league shutout. Rusty Torres hit a homer and double in support of the Angels' rookie righthander, while Mario Guerrero chipped in with two singles and a double.

In the nightcap, the Angels scored three runs in the third inning, two counting on a triple by Jerry Remy, and then added an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the fifth for what proved to be their winning tally. [The Sporting News]
