Ellis Valentine opened the ninth with a double and moved to third when Bombo Rivera grounded out. Jerry Koosman then walked Larry Parrish and Jose Morales intentionally, but that strategy went awry when Thornton rapped his single past the Mets' drawn-in infield. [The Sporting News]
