The standout candidate for the Cy Young Award, Randy Jones gained his 18th victory of the season as the Padres edged the Astros in 10 innings, 2-1. Jones and Joaquin Andujar dueled through nine scoreless stanzas before the Padres broke the deadlock in the 10th.

Johnny Grubb singled and gave way to pinch-runner Willie Davis, who stopped at third on a double by Mike Ivie. With two out, Doug Rader singled to drive in both runners.
