Making his first start since July 11, Dennis Eckersley allowed six hits and struck out 12 as the Indians defeated the Brewers, 7-2, in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader that was stopped by rain with two out in the top of the eighth. The second game was postponed.

Mike Hegan homered with a man on base for the Brewers' runs off Eckersley. The Indians, after picking up a pair of tainted tallies on three errors in the first inning, knocked out Eduardo Rodriguez in the fourth and scored four times on doubles by Buddy Bell, Duane Kuiper and Rick Manning and singles by Tommy Smith and Alan Ashby.
