Trailing, 7-1, the Twins erupted for five runs in the fifth inning, including a grand-slam homer by Butch Wynegar, and added two more runs in the eighth to defeat the Athletics, 8-7. In the fifth, singles by Dan Ford, Bob Randall and Roy Smalley accounted for one run. After Rod Carew was safe on an error to load the bases, Wynegar connected for the first jackpot wallop of his major league career.

In the eighth, Craig Kusick singled and yielded the paths to Jerry Terrell, who stole second. Ford walked. Steve Braun delivered a pinch-single, scoring Terrell and sending Ford to third. Larry Hisle followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
