Although faltering in the ninth inning, Jerry Koosman survived a Phillies' rally and pitched the Mets to a 3-2 victory. The Mets scored all their runs off Jim Kaat in the first on a double by Leon Brown, safe bunt by Bruce Boisclair, single by John Milner, sacrifice fly by Joe Torre and single by Felix Millan.

Koosman allowed only two infield hits by Johnny Oates until the ninth when the Phillies struck for their runs with two out on a walk to Mike Schmidt, double by Greg Luzinski and single by Ollie Brown, but Koosman then bore down and retired Jerry Martin on an infield grounder for the final out.
