Johnny Bench, who hit a double and sacrifice fly in the first game and his first homer since July 3 in the second game, drove in six of the Reds' runs in a 13-8 and 4-2 sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres. Manny Sarmiento, relieving for the Reds on his first day after being recalled from Indianapolis (American Association), gained his maiden major league victory in the opener. The Padres started the lidlifter with a four-run outburst against Don Gullett, but the Reds hammered three Padre pitchers for 11 of their 13 hits and all of their 13 runs in the first three innings. Bench accounted for four RBIs and Cesar Geronimo drove in three.
