Jim Bibby and Jim Kern, who relieved in the ninth inning, combined to pitch the Indians to a 2-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but Kern returned to the mound in the second game and uncorked a wild throw in the 12th inning that enabled the Brewers to gain a split with a 6-5 victory. The Indians scored their initial run in the opener on a walk to Buddy Bell, a stolen base and single by Frank Duffy in the fourth inning. Their other run in the eighth was unearned on two passed balls by Charlie Moore. Bibby was lifted after giving up two singles with one out in the ninth and Kern retired the last two batters.

Kern, relieving again in the 12th inning of the nightcap, walked Moore, uncorked a wild pitch and passed Robin Yount. Don Money then bounced a grounder to Kern, who slipped while fielding the ball and made an off-balance throw past first base, allowing Moore to score with the Brewers' winning run.
