Doyle Alexander, who had lost chances for no-hitters in the late innings of three previous games this season, retired 20 batters in succession before Rusty Staub singled in the seventh, but the righthander went on to pitch the Yankees to a 1-0 triumph over the Tigers. Alex Johnson singled in the ninth for the Tigers' only other hit. The Yankees scored in the third when Mickey Rivers singled following a double by Sandy Alomar. [The Sporting News]
