Dennis Eckersley pitched a three-hitter for the Indians and came out the winner when pinch-hitter Tommy Smith delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to beat the Red Sox, 1-0. Luis Tiant, who started for the Red Sox, also yielded only three hits before giving way to Tom Murphy in the 10th.

Rico Carty greeted the reliever with a single and was forced by Boog Powell, who took third on a single by Buddy Bell. Ron Pruitt then took Powell's place on the paths and scored on Smith's fly. [The Sporting News]
