The Reds, who had won seven straight games, were stopped by the Giants, who posted a 4-1 victory to end their own four-game losing streak. The Giants decided the outcome against Gary Nolan with two runs in the first inning on a single by Larry Herndon and homer by Gary Matthews.

The Reds' tally off John Montefusco counted in the third when Joe Morgan singled and Dan Driessen doubled, but the Giants added a run in their half on singles by Herndon and Gary Thomasson around a stolen base before concluding their scoring in the eighth on a double by Matthews and single by Darrell Evans.
