With a flash of speed, Rennis Stennett beat the throw home on a grounder by Dave Parker in the 12th inning to bring the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. Bob Forsch, who started on the mound for the Redbirds, produced their run with a homer in the third inning. Al Hrabosky relieved Forsch in the eighth and put down a Pirates' threat but then gave up the tying run in the ninth on singles by Bill Robinson and Bob Robertson around a sacrifice.

In the 12th, Dave Giusti walked and was forced on Stennett's attempted sacrifice. Stennett promptly stole second, stopped at third on a single by Tommy Helms and scored on Parker's grounder. [The Sporting News]
