Homers by George Mitterwald and Rick Monday, plus two unearned runs, enabled the Cubs to defeat the Expos, 4-3, in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The second game was rained out in the bottom half of the second inning. Mitterwald and Monday hit their homers in the third.

Then in the fifth, after singles by Mitterwald and Mick Kelleher, Ray Burris bunted and when Don Stanhouse threw the ball into left field trying for a forceout, both runners scored. The Expos had back-to-back doubles by Tim Foli and Gary Carter for a run in their half of the fifth and added their other tallies when Del Unser homered with a man on base in the sixth.
