Although Willie Stargell smashed a grand-slam homer for the Pirates, the Mets were able to gain a 7-4 victory with a 17-hit attack that included four for Bud Harrelson and three each for Joe Torre and Roy Staiger. The Mets scored four runs in the fourth inning, two counting on a double by Leo Foster, and built up a 6-0 lead before Willie Stargell hit his homer off Jon Matlack in the sixth following infield singles by Mario Mendoza and Rennie Stennett and a walk to Dave Parker. Staiger wrapped up the Mets' scoring with a homer in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
