Capitalizing on Lynn McGlothen's loss of control, the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 5-2, in a game stopped by rain after eight innings. Rain forced a delay of one hour, 33 minutes in the second before Hector Cruz accounted for the Cards' runs with a homer.

Ollie Brown hit for the circuit to open the Phillies' fifth. McGlothen then walked Tim McCarver, Larry Bowa and Dave Cash to load the bases before Garry Maddox singled to drive in two runs.
