Tom Griffin, obtained from the Astros on waivers only three days previously, turned on his former teammates and received credit for a 9-3 victory with the support of a 16-hit attack by the Padres. Griffin tired in the seventh inning and Butch Metzger finished to pick up his 10th save of the season.

Fred Kendall had four hits in five trips in the Padres' attack and drove in four runs, while Jerry Turner, who went 4-for-4 including a homer, accounted for three RBIs. Mike Ivie also hit a homer. [The Sporting News]
