. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Andy Hassler, who had lost 18 straight games over two seasons, finally gained a victory when the Royals won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-2, before going on to beat the White Sox again in the second game, 8-3. Hassler's triumph with the help of Mark Littell, who relieved in the eighth inning, enabled the lefthander to avoid tying the A. L. record of 19 defeats in a row by John Nabors of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916.

The Royals, held hitless for the first five innings, batted around in the sixth and scored five runs on seven hits, including a triple by George Brett and double by Al Cowens. Dave Nelson homered with a man on base for the Royals in the ninth. Ruppert Jones drove in three runs in the second game and John Mayberry hit his first homer since July 2 as the Royals completed the sweep. [The Sporting News]
