While Gaylord Perry was pitching a five-hit shutout, the Rangers enjoyed a pair of three-run innings and defeated the Twins, 6-0. Gene Clines doubled to open the first, Mike Hargrove singled and when Roy Smalley erred on a grounder by Jeff Burroughs, Clines scored. Toby Harrah singled to drive in Hargrove. Pete Redfern, the Twins' starter, then walked two batters to force in the Rangers' third run. Their other burst came in the eighth and included a homer by Roy Howell and two-run single by Tom Grieve.
