John Denny, the only Cardinals' starter over the .500 mark, brought his record to 6-5 by defeating the Phillies, 6-2, with the help of Al Hrabosky, who relieved in the eighth inning. The Cards, after taking a 2-1 lead against Jim Lonborg, decided the outcome with three runs in the seventh off Tug McGraw, who hurt himself with an error.

After singles by Keith Hernandez and Hector Cruz, Lee Richard bunted safely and when McGraw threw wildly, two runs scored. Richard reached third and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Mumphrey. Ted Simmons added a run with a homer in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
