George Foster smashed a homer with two men on base in the fifth inning to power the Reds to a 4-1 victory and increase their West Division lead over the Dodgers to 12 games. Foster, who raised his league-leading RBI total to 97, connected for his drive off Tommy John after singles by Dave Concepcion and Joe Morgan.

The Reds counted their other run in the seventh when Ed Armbrister dashed home on a double steal with Foster. Pat Zachry posted his fourth straight victory over the Dodgers, whose only run came on a homer by Ron Cey. [The Sporting News]
