Mark Fidrych, the Tigers' charismatic rookie, beat the Indians, 6-1, for his 12th victory in 16 decisions. The young righthander, who yielded six hits, turned in his 14th complete game in 17 starts and reduced his league-leading earned run average to 1.91.

The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie and brought Fidrych his victory with three runs in the fifth inning on scoring singles by Ron LeFlore, Dan Meyer and Jason Thompson. The attendance of 35,395 boosted the Tigers' total to 1,015,388, marking the club's 12th consecutive year over one million. [The Sporting News]
