Joe Ferguson, who had never hit more than one triple in a game previously in his major league career, rapped a pair of three-baggers to pace the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Ferguson hit his first triple in the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Anderson. Then in the fourth, Ferguson tripled again to drive in Ted Simmons, who had walked, before scoring himself on a second sacrifice fly by Anderson.
