Pinch-hitter Jerry Martin delivered a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, scoring Johnny Oates, to bring the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. With one out, Greg Luzinski singled and gave way on the paths to Jim Kaat. Jay Johnstone followed with a ground-rule double. Kaat stumbled and fell on his way to third base.

Taking no chances that Kaat might be hurt, manager Danny Ozark sent Oates in as the new runner. Al Hrabosky replaced Eric Rasmussen on the mound for the Cards and walked Ollie Brown intentionally, but Martin thwarted Redbird hopes for a double play with his sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
