Randy Jones, the Padres' 18-game winner, suffered his third straight defeat and seventh of the season, losing to the Mets, 5-4, in an encounter with Jerry Koosman, who raised his record to 14-7 with his eighth victory in his last nine starts. The Mets jumped on Jones for four runs in the second inning with Koosman hitting a single to account for two RBIs.

The Padres came back with a four-run rally in the third and the tie persisted until the eighth when the Mets broke the deadlock. Joe Torre led off with a single and gave way to pinch-runner Leo Foster. Jerry Grote sacrificed.
