Rusty Staub, who raised his career RBI total to 1,002, drove in three runs with a double in the eighth inning to bring the Tigers a 7-5 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Bengals' bats were stilled in the second game as they lost to the Rangers, 3-0. Jason Thompson also had three RBIs for the Tigers in the lidlifter, driving in runs with a single, fielder's choice and homer. Two Ranger relievers blew a 5-4 lead in the eighth. Jeff Terpko issued two walks and Joe Hoerner gave up another to load the bases before Staub lashed his triple. Dave Lemanczyk, who started and lost the previous night's game to the Rangers, returned in relief of Dave Roberts, pitched four scoreless innings and gained credit for the victory.
