In a fantastic comeback, the Reds wiped out a nine-run deficit and defeated the Cubs, 13-10, in 10 innings. The Cubs opened with two runs in the first and scored seven times in the second while collecting eight straight hits. The Reds picked up an unearned run in the third, but the Cubs made it 10-1 in their half.

The Reds began to rally in the sixth with a two-run homer by Tony Perez. Johnny Bench hit for the circuit with two men on base in the seventh and another run followed on a single by Perez and double by Cesar Geronimo. In the eighth, Bench accounted for his fourth RBI of the game with a single, cutting the Cubs' lead to 10-8, before Dave Concepcion singled in the ninth and Ken Griffey homered with two out to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

Bench was safe on an error by Mick Kelleher in the 10th. Pinch-runner Ed Armbrister stopped at second on a single by Perez. On a pickoff play, Perez was caught off first, but Pete LaCock threw wildly in the rundown and Armbrister raced home with the Reds' go-ahead run. Concepcion singled to score Perez and Doug Flynn capped the comeback with a triple, driving in Concepcion. [The Sporting News]
