With a triple by Fred Stanley as the payoff blow, the Yankees scored all their runs in the second inning to defeat the Royals, 5-3. The Royals also did all their scoring in one stanza, taking the lead in the first with three runs, including a homer by Amos Otis with a man on base.

Chris Chambliss and Carlos May opened the Yankee second with singles. After Graig Nettles flied out, Oscar Gamble grounded to John Mayberry, who threw wildly to second trying to start a double play, and Chambliss scored. Willie Randolph singled, driving in May. Stanley then hit his triple, scoring Gamble and Randolph, before crossing the plate himself on a sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers. [The Sporting News]
