The wildness of Tom Griffin loaded the bases in the first inning and Mike Vail capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run double to enable the Mets to defeat the Padres, 2-1. Griffin walked Bruce Boisclair and John Milner and hit Joe Torre with a pitch before Vail rapped his two-bagger. The Padres counted off Jon Matlack in the fifth on singles by Fred Kendall and Enzo Hernandez around an infield out. Matlack was lifted in the eighth with two men on base and one out.
