Pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, Willie Horton came through with a homer for the Tigers to enable Mark Fidrych to defeat the Rangers, 4-3, for the sensational rookie's 13th victory of the season. Mike Hargrove scored the Rangers' first two runs, crossing the plate on a passed ball in the second and hitting a homer in the fourth.

Rusty Staub likewise accounted for the Tigers' first two tallies with a single in the third and homer in the fifth. Aurelio Rodriguez tripled and Alex Johnson singled to put the Tigers ahead in the sixth, but the Rangers tied the score in the seventh with a walk, sacrifice and single by Gene Clines.
