Luis Tiant emerged the winner in a duel with Nolan Ryan when Fred Lynn drove in a run with a two-out single in the 10th inning to give the Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Angels. The Red Sox counted their initial marker in the third after Rick Burleson walked with two out and took third on a single by Denny Doyle. The pair then worked a delayed double steal attempt with Burleson scoring before Doyle was tagged out in a rundown.

Tiant, who had pitched scoreless ball for 20 innings, had his string broken when the Angels pulled even with an unearned run in the seventh. Butch Hobson drew a walk in the 10th, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Burleson, took third on an infield out by Doyle and scored on Lynn's single. [The Sporting News]
