A balk by Bill Bonham proved the key factor when the Dodgers scored three runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Cubs, 3-2. Rick Monday homered for the Cubs in the first. Bonham began the fourth by walking Bill Buckner and Steve Garvey. Ron Cey singled, driving in Buckner and sending Garvey to third.

Bonham then committed his balk, allowing Garvey to score and moving Cey to second. Bill Russell followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the winning run. The Cubs fell short with a run in the fifth on a single by Monday and double by Jose Cardenal. [The Sporting News]
