Nolan Ryan struck out 17 batters for a season high in the major leagues and gained the victory when the Angels defeated the Tigers, 5-4, in 11 innings with the winning run scoring on a wild pitch by John Hiller. Ryan had a 3-1 lead going into the ninth inning but blew his advantage when pinch-hitter Dan Meyer hit a two-run homer to tie the score. The Angels went ahead again with a run in the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Davis with the bases loaded, only to have the Tigers pull even in their half when Rusty Staub doubled to drive in Alex Johnson.

However in the 11th, Dave Collins singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball after Jerry Remy walked. One out later, Hiller snapped off a curve that hit in front of the plate and bounced over the head of catcher Bruce Kimm, allowing Collins to score the deciding run. John Verhoeven relieved Ryan and retired the Tigers in their half of the 11th, although issuing two walks. [The Sporting News]
