Breaking through a five-man infield defense set up by the Braves, pinch-hitter Mike Lum lashed a line drive past the glove of first baseman Willie Montanez for a run-scoring single in the 11th inning to bring the Reds a 3-2 victory. The Braves picked up both their runs in the first inning. The Reds came back with a counter on singles by Cesar Geronimo and Pete Rose around a sacrifice in the second and tied the score in the seventh when Rose tripled and Rod Gilbreath threw wildly on the relay from the outfield.

Tony Perez set up the Reds' winning run with a single in the 11th and went to third one out later when Darrel Chaney threw the ball away on a grounder by Dave Concepcion. The Braves then brought in left fielder Tom Paciorek and placed him on the right side of the infield, but Lum wrecked the setup with his game-winning hit. [The Sporting News]
