Errors by Dave Concepcion and George Foster enabled the Cubs to score a pair of unearned runs to defeat the Reds, 3-2. The Cubs counted their initial marker in the first inning. Rick Monday singled and Manny Trillo walked with one out. George Mitterwald grounded to Joe Morgan, but Concepcion dropped the throw at second, allowing Monday to score.

In the third, Trillo walked, stole second and scored on a double by Mitterwald. Rob Sperring singled in the fourth and when Foster dropped a fly ball by Rick Reusehel for a two-base error, Sperring raced home with what proved to be the Cubs' winning run.
