Led by Jay Johnstone and Garry Maddox, each with three hits and two runs batted in, the Phillies defeated the Astros, 7-4. Cliff Johnson started the Astros' scoring with a homer in the second inning, but Johnstone knocked in the tying tally with a double in the fourth. The Astros broke ahead again with a three-run outburst in the fifth that included doubles by Jerry DaVanon and Roger Metzger, but their lead was short-lived.

The Phillies erupted for four runs in the home half of the inning after loading the bases with singles by Tommy Hutton, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa. Greg Luzinski walked to force in one run, another scored on an infield out by Johnstone and two followed on a single by Maddox and a wild throw from the outfield by Wilbur Howard.
