The N. L.'s two last-place clubs battled through 16 innings before the Giants defeated the Expos, 5-4. Jose Morales hit a three-run double in the eighth inning when the Expos scored four times to take a 4-2 lead, but the Giants rallied to tie the game in the ninth with a homer by Bobby Murcer and run-scoring single by Dave Rader.

The game then wended its way to a conclusion in the 16th after four hours and 16 minutes of play. Ken Reitz opened the inning with a single and was forced by Gary Matthews. Murcer grounded out, sending Matthews to second, and Larry Herndon followed with the winning single. [The Sporting News]
