Pinch-hitting in ninth inning, Reggie Jackson came through with a grand-slam homer to power the Orioles to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the White Sox gained a split by winning the nightcap, 7-3. Jim Palmer, pitching the lidlifter for the Orioles, was staked to a 2-0 lead and allowed only one hit until the eighth when the White Sox tied the score on a single by Jorge Orta after a walk, hit batsman and infield single by Jim Essian had loaded the bases. Ken Singleton drew a walk to open the Orioles' ninth and, with one out, Dave Duncan singled. After a wild pitch, Brooks Robinson walked. Jackson was announced as the pinch-hitter for Tommy Harper and Terry Forster took the mound in relief for the White Sox, but Jackson upset the percentage by smashing his homer.

In the nightcap, Lamar Johnson rapped three singles, drove in two runs and scored twice for the White Sox, while Jerry Hairston also accounted for two RBIs, walking with the bases loaded to force in one run and hitting a single for another. [The Sporting News]
