The Angels blew an 8-0 lead in the ninth inning but came back to defeat the Yankees, 11-8, with three runs in the 11th. Dave Collins and Tony Solaita hit homers for the Angels to help build up their big lead while Frank Tanana allowed only two hits before falling apart in the ninth. Graig Nettles and Fran Healy hit run-scoring singles in the Yankees' rally and Willie Randolph batted in a pair with a double to chase Tanana. After John Verhoeven relieved, Carlos May hit a two-run single and Roy White followed with a homer to tie the score.

However in the 11th, Jerry Remy singled and when Sparky Lyle threw late to second on a bunt by mario Guerrero, both runners were safe. Tommy Davis, batting for Dan Briggs, singled to score Remy. When White's throw from the outfield hit Remy and bounced away, Lyle retrieved the ball and threw wildly past the plate, allowing Guerrero to come home with the second run.
