The Tigers' youthful infield combination of shortstop Mark Wagner and second baseman Jerry Manuel committed two errors each in the ninth inning, enabling the White Sox to score seven unearned runs and gain a 12-7 victory. Manuel started the stanza by booting a grounder by Pat Kelly. After an infield out, Brian Downing singled, scoring Kelly. Wagner then bobbled a grounder by Chet Lemon and threw wildly for two errors, Downing taking third and Lemon second. An intentional pass to Ralph Garr loaded the bases and another pass to Jack Brohamer forced in Downing. Jerry Hairston followed with a sacrifice fly. Manuel mishandled a grounder by Jorge Orta for his second error to permit another run.

The White Sox added three more tallies on singles by Bill Stein, Kelly and Jim Spencer before the inning ended. Bill Freehan hit his fifth homer of the season for the Tigers and 200th of his major league career, connecting with two men on base in the second inning. [The Sporting News]
