Opening a four-game preview of the possible N. L. playoffs, the Phillies scored in the 13th inning on a double by Garry Maddox and defeated the Reds, 5-4. The Phillies broke a 1-1 tie and took a 4-1 lead in the sixth when Dave Cash singled, Mike Schmidt drove him home with a double and Greg Luzinski followed with a homer.

The Reds chased Jim Kaat in the eighth, when Joe Morgan led off with a double. Johnny Bench greeted the arrival of Ron Reed with a homer. Dan Driessen batted for Manny Sarmiento in the ninth and tied the score with a round-tripper. With two out in the 13th, Jay Johnstone drew a walk from Rawly Eastwick and raced home with the Phillies' winning run on Maddox' second double of the game. [The Sporting News]
