Jerry Remy raced home from second base on a throwing error by Graig Nettles in the 11th inning to bring the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Yankees. Remy drew a walk to lead off the stanza and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Bob Jones.

Bill Melton then bounced to Nettles, who threw over the head of first baseman Chris Chambliss. Remy kept running and beat Chambliss' throw to the plate. The Yankees had a two-run homer by Elrod Hendricks in the second inning but then fell behind, 4-2, before coming back to tie the score in the ninth on doubles by Nettles and Lou Piniella and a single by Thurman Munson.
