Allowing only four hits, Jerry Reuss outdueled Randy Jones and pitched the Pirates to a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Reuss' complete game was the Pirates' fifth straight, all resulting in victories. Jones, who went out for a pinch-batter in the eighth inning, after giving up only one run, was the loser on a five-hitter.

The Pirates counted their initial tally in the fourth when Richie Zisk singled, Bob Robertson doubled and Dave Parker hit a sacrifice fly. Parker added the remaining two runs by hitting a homer off Butch Metzger in the eighth after a walk to Robertson. [The Sporting News]
