A walk to Don Kessinger with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning handed the Cardinals a 1-0 victory over the Reds. Starting pitchers Fred Norman for the Reds and Eric Rasmussen for the Cardinals dueled through 10 scoreless stanzas. Al Hrabosky was the Cards' winner in relief, while Rawly Eastwick drew the defeat.

In the 11th, Keith Hernandez led off with a double. After an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Charlie Chant beat out a bunt for his first major league hit, loading the bases. The next two batters, Willie Crawford and Ron Fairly, hit short flies to Cesar Geronimo, Hernandez holding third, but Eastwick then walked Kessinger on four straight pitches to force in the only run of the game.
