The Red Sox lost Fergie Jenkins for the remainder of the season when the veteran righthander tore his Achilles tendon on a play at first base in the fifth inning of a 3-0 victory over the Rangers. Relieving Jenkins with one out, Tom Murphy passed Juan Beniquez but then retired the last 14 batters in a row, needing only 39 pitches, to gain credit for the victory.

The Red Sox scored initially in the first inning on a triple by Denny Doyle and sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn. Their other runs followed in the fourth when Lynn doubled, Carl Yastrzemski tripled and Jim Rice doubled. [The Sporting News]
