The Pirates extended their winning streak to seven games when Larry Demery pitched a five-hitter and shut out the Padres, 5-0. The Pirates scored in the first inning on a single by Frank Taveras, a stolen base and double by Willie Stargell.

After another stolen base by Taveras and wild throw by catcher Bob Davis added a marker in the third, the Pirates iced the victory with three runs in the fourth. Richie Hebner knocked in two tallies with a double and later scored on the front end of a double steal with Manny Sanguillen. [The Sporting News]
