Getting two RBIs from Thurman Munson, the Yankees posted a 3-1 victory to pull 11½ games ahead of the second-place Orioles in the East Division standings. Willie Randolph singled in the third inning, stole second, moved up on a safe bunt by Fred Stanley and scored the Yankees' first run on a single by Munson.

In the fifth, a double by Mickey Rivers, sacrifice bunt by Roy White and sacrifice fly by Munson added the second run. Carlos May singled and Chris Chambliss doubled in the seventh to make it 3-0 before the Orioles picked up their lone tally in the eighth on a single by Al Bumbry, pass to Bobby Grich and single by Reggie Jackson.
