Tom Seaver pitched a four-hitter and triumphed in his duel with Steve Carlton when Roy Staiger drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Phillies. The loss was the seventh straight for the Phils.

The Mets collected only five hits off Carlton, but bunched singles by Dave Kingman, Joe Torre and Staiger for their run. Seaver, in posting his fourth shutout of the season, struck out eight to go over the 200 mark for the ninth straight year with a total of 202. [The Sporting News]
